The average document is photocopied about 19 times. No matter how many times you photocopy something, however, you still run the risk of losing each one of those copies. That's where document digitization services come in. Through document scanning and imaging, you can convert paper documents and store them -- safely -- online for as long as possible.

But what about converting microfiche?

Microforms are scaled-down reproductions of documents, typically either films or paper, made for the purpose of either transmission, storage, reading, and printing. These images are typically reduced to about one twenty-fifth of its original size, but for special purposes, greater reductions could be used.

Microfilm consists of reels but microfiche are flat sheets of the film: 105 x 148 millimeter, which is the same size as the global standard for paper size. All microfiche can be read with their text parallel to the long side of the microfiche. Additionally, frames can be used as a portrait orientation or landscape orientation, equipped with a title for visual identification.

The most commonly used format for converting microfiche is a portrait image of about 10 x 14 millimeters.

Document digitization services can help you convert microfiche to digital images from all formats, including computer output on microfiche (COM), step and repeat microfiche, and jacketed microfiche. No matter the size of your microfiche conversion project, whether it's a few individual sheets or thousands, they can be quickly and efficiently transformed into high-quality, digital documents that can be safely stored across the web and easily accessible from anywhere in the world.

These organizations use the most modernized, advanced microfiche scanners, as well. The majority of microfiche scanners can capture individual frames scan time, but experienced digital scanning companies can scan entire rows, including the areas in between the frames, resulting in the best digital image available. In addition to digitally scanning microfiche documents, there are plenty of other services that digital scanning companies can offer, including:

  • Large format conversion

  • Map scanning

  • Newspaper digitization

  • Slides and photos

  • Aperture card scanning

  • Indexing

  • On-site scanning

  • Book digitization

  • Electronic to archival microfilm conversion
